The Silent Struggle: Why More South African Women are Choosing SMP for Density

You’ve finished your final session at SMP-SA, and you look 10 years younger. Now what? While SMP is low-maintenance, it is not no-maintenance. To keep your “follicles” looking crisp and prevent the pigment from turning a “bluish” hue, you need a strategy.

1. The 6-Day Rule

For the first 6 days after a session, do not touch, wash, or sweat. Your scalp is essentially a series of tiny open “wounds” holding expensive pigment. Let them close naturally to ensure the dots stay sharp and don’t “blur.”

2. The Sun is the Enemy of Ink

UV rays break down pigment. In South Africa, a high-SPF sunscreen is your SMP’s best friend. If you’re going to be at the beach or on the golf course, wear a hat. Constant sun exposure will cause the pigment to fade prematurely, leading to more frequent touch-ups.

3. Moisturise for Matte Perfection

A dry scalp can look “ashy,” which dulls the look of the SMP. Use a non-greasy, matte moisturiser. This keeps the skin healthy and ensures the “hair” looks like it has a natural, healthy sheen rather than a sweaty glow.

4. Know When to Touch Up

On average, an SMP treatment lasts 3 to 5 years before needing a “refresh.” If you notice the dots are looking lighter or the “stubble” doesn’t look as sharp as it used to, it’s time for a single-session touch-up to bring the density back to 100%.
